Jin Mao conquered by tired climber
Update: 6/17/2008 12:19:00 PM Source: Wentrip
An unidentified man became the sixth man to climb the 88-floor Jin Mao Tower last night, although he certainly took his time completing the ascent.

The man dressed in a black T-shirt began climbing the building from the top of a dumpster at around 6pm, and didn't finish until around 11pm after taking a short break to catch his breath near the 80th floor.

Police said he may be held in custody for a term ranging from five days to two weeks.

"He grasped a thin pillar on the surface of the wall while his feet were on a dumpster, and quickly jumped onto the wall and took his first step," said a clerk surnamed Sun who works in the tower.

The Jin Mao has fixed steel spikes along the surface of its walls to prevent climbing, but that didn't stop the man from stepping over them and climbing the building.

He ran out of steam and stopped at the 80th floor according to witnesses.

"He had to have a rest and then continued his climb," said Sun."He is not as strong and swift as Frenchman Alain Robert who only took half an hour to climb to the top," an unidentified witness said while the climb was still in progress. "He took about four hours and is still on the wall now."

The Pudong police tried to contact with the man and persuade him to give up climbing, but he refused.

Robert, who has climbed many of the world's tallest buildings, was the last person to climb the tower, a feat he completed on May 31. Police kept him in custody for five days.
